Race Forward’s Strategic Plan Centers…

Communities of color winning governing power.

Public institutions being transformed, and better equipped to advance racial justice.

Communities and cross-sector institutions within the movement effectively collaborating for change so all of us can have the opportunity to thrive and prosper.

The aim of our strategic direction is Governance, a complex structure for decision-making, resource allocation, power distribution, and order that centers those most impacted by structural racism.

Specifically, we are focusing on Racial Justice Governance, the ability to influence, control, steward, or change systems, processes, institutions, and culture, and to distribute resources in service of our collective freedom from systemic racism and injustice.

Racial Justice Governance is governance that…

Deepens and expands our communities’ ability to produce racially equitable outcomes for all.

Prioritizes the collective over the individual, human dignity over profit.

Repairs and heals past harms brought about by systemic oppression.

Transforms inequitable institutions and systems toward racial equity.

Liberates everyone from systemic racism and injustice, and all forms of oppression and enslavement.

Racial Justice Governance requires communities most impacted by racism to gain or increase governing power whether through electoral power, collaborative governance with institutions and other communities, types of participatory decision-making structure, etc. Race Forward’s definition of racial justice governance also requires dominant institutions in society, such as governments, to become racially equitable willing to contribute to building the power of communities of color.
